How to get from Johannesburg to Kruger: transfer times, prices and the option most people miss

Almost every Kruger trip starts at OR Tambo. What happens next decides whether guests arrive in time for the afternoon game drive or watch it leave without them.

The three ways to do it

There is no single best answer — it depends on your arrival time, your group size and whether you want the Panorama Route in your day or simply want to be at the lodge.

  • Private transfer: departs whenever you land, direct to your lodge or reserve gate, comfort stops on request.
  • Shared shuttle: the cheapest seat, but one fixed 07:00 departure from OR Tambo, so it only suits guests who overnight in Johannesburg first.
  • Fly and connect: a scheduled flight to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit, then a short road leg to the reserve gate.

Real driving times from OR Tambo

These are the durations we plan on, measured door to door including fuel and comfort stops. They are longer than route-planner estimates because they include the realities of the N4, the escarpment and reserve gate procedures.

  • Hoedspruit and the Greater Kruger lodges (Kapama, Thornybush, Timbavati): 430 km, 5h 45m.
  • Hazyview and the Panorama lodges: 400 km, 5h.
  • Sabi Sand Game Reserve: 480 km, 6h 30m, with a Panorama Route comfort stop planned in.

What it costs

Our published one-way prices for the Kruger corridor are ZAR 8 500 for a private vehicle carrying one to three passengers, at any departure time, and ZAR 1 350 per person on the shared shuttle. Larger parties are quoted on a minibus, and lodges inside the reserves are met at the agreed gate rather than in the bush.

For two travellers the shuttle is cheaper. For three or more, a private vehicle usually costs the same or less once you add the flexibility of leaving when your flight actually lands.

The option most people miss

If you arrive in the afternoon, do not drive to the lowveld the same day. A late departure means arriving after dark, when reserve gates close and night driving on the R40 is best avoided. Overnight near OR Tambo and take the 07:00 shuttle, or leave first thing in a private car and reach the lodge in time for lunch and the afternoon drive.

The reverse leg matters too: shuttles back to Johannesburg board at 11:45 at Kamogelo Centre in Hoedspruit and 12:30 at Perry's Bridge in Hazyview, so plan your international departure with a three-hour airport buffer.

How to book it

Send us your flight numbers, the lodge name and the number of passengers, and our desk confirms the vehicle, driver and price in writing. Rand payments can be settled by card, and travel agents receive the same corridors on STO rates.
