The twenty minutes after you land at Victoria Falls

The name board

The doors at Victoria Falls Airport open onto a short, bright hall and a row of drivers holding name boards. Ours stand inside, not in the car park, because the difference between a good arrival and a bad one is whether a tired family has to guess who they belong to. Twenty kilometres of good tar later, about half an hour, they are at their hotel in town or at a river lodge on the Zambezi. That leg costs USD 33 per person, one way, on a minimum of two travellers.

It is the easiest transfer we run, and the one that sets the tone for everything after it. Guests who arrive calm do the sunset cruise that evening. Guests who arrive frazzled skip it and lose a day.

The argument about the shuttle

Almost every week I watch a version of the same conversation. A couple has booked per-person seats, which is how our Falls rates are quoted, and it works out well for them: two people, daytime flight, a shared vehicle that leaves once the hall clears. A family of five is having a harder time, because five seats and a lot of luggage want a vehicle of their own.

My honest advice, after years of it: two of you on a daytime arrival, take the seat. Four or more, or anything landing late, ask us for the private vehicle. The total often lands close to the same number and the car leaves when your flight actually does, not when the last passenger finds their bag.

Three countries, one airport

What outsiders underestimate about this airport is how much of its traffic never stays in Zimbabwe. Livingstone is over the bridge through two sets of controls — about an hour and a half if the paperwork is in order, from USD 61 per person, USD 75 out to the Livingstone lodges. Kasane is through Kazungula with a vehicle handover on the Botswana side, roughly two and a quarter hours, USD 111.

The kilometres are trivial. The time goes into formalities, and formalities do not care about your flight. That is why we quote cross-border legs by hand and why we ask for a three-hour buffer before any international departure. It reads as caution on a quote sheet. It is the reason our files hold.

Where our drivers actually stop

The names repeat, file after file. In town and along the riverfront at USD 33: the Victoria Falls Hotel, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Ilala Lodge, Stanley & Livingstone, Victoria Falls River Lodge, Mpala Jena and the Chundu Island jetty. Further out on the Zimbabwe side, Matetsi at USD 73 and Hwange Safari Lodge at USD 139.

Across the bridge it is the Avani and the Royal Livingstone from USD 61. Down the Chobe riverfront it is Chobe Mopane and Elephant Valley at USD 181, Muchenje and Ngoma at USD 188. If your lodge is not on that list it sits in one of those bands — send us the name and we will tell you which.

The fee nobody warned them about

The other conversation I have often begins at a gate or a jetty, when someone is asked for money they thought was already paid. Rainforest and park entrance fees, river-usage and conservation levies on the Zambezi, the bridge levy between Zimbabwe and Zambia, fuel and aviation and government fees on the Zambian side. None of it is ours and none of it carries a markup.

We could bury those numbers inside a rate and look cheaper on a comparison sheet. We show them as separate lines instead, so travellers can see what is transport and what is government. It costs us the occasional booking. It has never cost us an argument at a gate.
